Learn to Share
Sharing with others is the best thing anyone can ever do. People can share anything, ranging from emotions like enjoyment and sorrow; material things like books and videos; to more spiritual matters such as faith. The smallest act of giving can change somebody’s world. When sharing, people are able to see from another’s point of view.
I am always willing to share the items I own and my feelings with my friends and the people around me. But it wasn’t until 2 years ago, that I realised sharing could be so meaningful.
I was worrying about when I could watch the latest film at the time I heard about the shocking earthquake in Sichuan. Millions of people were struggling desperatly to survive the catastrophe. Seeing images of the people affected by the disaster, I felt ashamed for not doing anything to help. I felt there must be something I could do! I could donate some of my pocket money, I could persuade people around me to do whatever they could to help, I could write articles on the Internet to comfort them and let them know that we are all in this together and everything would be okay.
I put my ideas into practice immediately. I realised what I was doing could be regarded as the noblest kind of sharing. I was sharing all I had to help those experiencing difficulties: sharing money to help them build their new houses; sharing relationships with them to ask for more help; sharing my faith with them to cheer them up and to keep them holding on.
As I shared, I also felt compassion I had never felt before. It was quite different from sharing the joy I felt with a classmate by reading a funny joke—it felt like much more. I was sharing with the world, which is more meaningful than sharing personal feelings with my friends.
From then on, I began to enjoy this kind of sharing with the world. I began to fully understand the meaning of the saying “It’s better to give than to receive.” When you help others, you will feel satisfaction rising from deep in your heart. That’s exactly how I felt after helping those in Sichuan to make it through the earthquake and, now as I help those in southwest china to make it through the recent drought.
It’s great to share with friends, but it’s also great to share with strangers. For “It’s not the gift that counts, it’s the thought”. By being willing to share with those in the world who need it more than you do, it’ll change a person’s life entirly
